Turning Back Refugees at US Border ‘Nothing New’ Says Bowdoin’s Wells (Salon)

The United States of America is well known for welcoming immigrants to her shores throughout history, said Allen Wells, Bowdoin’s Roger Howell Jr. Professor of History. But, in an article published in Salon, Wells also pointed out that this has not always been the case.

President Trump’s order to restrict immigration from certain countries is nothing new, he said: “American presidents have periodically curtailed the entry of individuals or groups in the name of national security.” One example Wells cited is that of Jewish refugees from Europe who were denied entry into the US during World War II.
